Lending A Hand To Save Man’s Best Friend

By Anne Marie Turner

Rena Bonne, Rockaway Taco, Veggie Island, and Absolute Vodka present Brunch on the Beach on September 12. The fundraiser is in support of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Best Friends is one of the leading organizations for saving shelter animals from mistreatment and euthanizing of animals deemed “unadoptable.”

According to the American Humane Society, in 2008 approximately 3.7 animals were euthanized in shelters across the nation. While this number is significantly less than the 1997 statistic that stated that 65% of all animals that entered a shelter would face euthanization, it is still unnecessarily high. The Best Friends organization was responsible for rescuing more than 4,000 animals abandoned after Hurricane Katrina and for giving refuge, care and rehabilitation to 22 of the dogs rescued from Michael Vick’s dog fighting ring.

Rena Bonne, of Long Beach, takes in pit bull mixes that are about to be euthanized and rehabilitates them. She has rehabilitated six pit mixes since March. She bonded with David of the Taco Stand because they both have rescued pit bull mixes. Together, with Elizabeth Gilchrist of Veggie Island, they came up with Brunch at the Beach. Brunch at the Beach is a fundraiser in which they will sell picnic baskets to raise money for Best Friends. The baskets consist of generously donated Absolute vodka, Bloody Mary mix or orange juice, a variety of food from Rockaway Taco and Veggie Island, a coupon for DiCosmo’s Ice, and a cup of coffee from JACK’S Coffee. These large baskets cost $15 per person. If you want to order a basket portioned for more than one person, it will cost an addition $15 per person.

To order a basket, e-mail Rbfarmstand@gmail.com, or stop by Rockaway Taco or Veggie Island in person. For additional questions call Veggie Island at 347- 213-7466. Pick up for the baskets begins at 10 a.m. on September 12 at Veggie Island on Beach 96 Street and Rockaway Boulevard. If you would like to get involved in rescue work, contact Rena Bonne at drbonne@gmail.com.
