New Hours Announced At Rockaway Libraries

As a result of budget cuts the Queens Library, this week, announced reduced hours for libraries throughout the borough.

According to an email, “the new schedule keeps the Central Library in Jamaica open seven days a week, and 19 libraries open on Saturday.”

Arverne, Broad Channel, Howard Beach and Seaside will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Far Rockaway and Peninsula Libraries will be closed only on Sundays.

In making the announcement, CEO Thomas W. Galante said, “The new service schedule delivers library service every weekday in every community. Expanded evening hours support those who work, while the full weekday schedule supports the education of children after school.”

Beginning Tuesday, September 7, Arverne Library and Seaside Library will be open: Monday and Thursday 1- 8 p.m.; Tuesdays 1-6 p.m.; Wednesdays and Fridays 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Broad Channel and Howard Beach hours are: Mondays and Thursdays 1- 8 p.m.; Tuesdays 1-6 p.m.; Wednesdays and Fridays 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Thursdays 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Far Rockaway and Peninsula branches will be open on Mondays 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Tuesdays 1-6 p.m.; Wednesdays 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Thursdays 1-8 p.m.; Fridays 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

According to the email from the Queens Library, weekend hours are as geographically dispersed as possible. Special efforts were made to keep Adult Learner Programs accessible.
