Announces Community Cell Phone Drive

Assemblywoman Audrey I. Pheffer is pleased to announce her partnership with District Attorney Richard Brown and Eric Aviles, Fairfield Inn by Marriott Hotel manager, in expanding the Verizon Wireless HopeLine program to the 23rd Assembly District. Aviles, a resident of the Arverne by the Sea neighborhood in Rockaway, has created a cell phone donation campaign among his colleagues at the Fairfield Inn by Marriott New York Hotel in Long Island City to provide contributions to this important service.

HopeLine was founded with the goal of assisting community agencies and organizations that support survivors of domestic violence. The program provides participants access to a wireless phone and service, along with a voice mailbox, and can help victims of domestic violence to rebuild their lives by giving them the means to communicate with family, friends, agency and shelter support staff, and current or prospective employers.

As part of the refurbishing process, all personal data is erased prior to distributing it for re-use. This insures that all private information is removed before the phones are distributed, protecting the privacy of all parties involved.

“A cell phone is a life saving tool for victims of domestic violence. Donating your phone is not only good for the environment, but can serve as a lifeline for those in need,” said Pheffer.
