The Union Of Rockaway Artists; Skowron Solo
Commentary by Susan Hartenstein

“Rockaway Artists Unframed” is an exhibit not to be missed. Beginning with an opening reception on Saturday, August 21 at 7 p.m. in sTudio 7 Gallery, RoCA at Fort Tilden and continuing the following day from 12-4 p.m. Yuri’s vision includes creating a surprise party atmosphere at the reception with all participants seeing their own image for the first time together, in a festive and friendly gala-like setting. In keeping with the festivities, we are all asked to bring food and drink to share.

This is a show that can only be seen this weekend. Do so. An extraordinary accomplishment – a visual document of the artists who help define and are shaped by our peninsula.

In some 145 photographic portraits artist Yuri Yurov has captured the spirit, drama, playfulness, strength, vulnerability, seriousness, humor, courage, individuality and universal humanity that inhabit some of the most creative individuals who live and work on our peninsula. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then my words are feeble attempts to define the intangible essences captured by the lens, the lighting and the talents of Yuri Yurov in these black and white portraits; that which is in the ethos between the shapes and forms in these self-defining images. As in all good art, the more you look, the more you see. Actors, writers, painters, sculptors, dancers, musicians, playwrights, art educators, filmmakers, directors; all are united under one roof, in one space; many of whom you may know, or think you know, and many whose acquaintance you may make for the first time within the walls of RAA’s sTudio 7 Gallery. What emerges is that with which each of us can ultimately and intimately connect.

“The Art of Arthur Skowron” will showcase the many talents of this painter, photographer, poet and musician. The third of August’s solo exhibits, it is on view Saturday, August 28 and Sunday, August 29. Gallery hours each of those days are 12 noon to 4 p.m.

Call to Artists: Last year was the inaugural presentation of InkSplash, reviewed in the pages of the prestigious Journal of the Print World. The Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) invites all printmakers who reside in New York State only, to submit entries for Ink- Splash 2010 (October 9 - November 7, 2010). The juried exhibition is to feature original print works in printmaking techniques such as intaglio, monoprint, etching and original experimental technique, as practiced by master printmakers in a changing world. Excluded are photographs, reproductions or giclee prints. InkSplash will be on view in sTudio 6 Gallery, RoCA at Fort Tilden, presented in partnership with the National Park Service / Gateway National Recreation Area. Christian Le Gars, the master printmaker who curated last year’s show also curates the show this year. InkSplash will coincide and coordinate with the prestigious International Fine Print Dealers Association’s Print Fair and Fine Art Print Week.

All submitted images need to be on a CD for consideration for entry into Inksplash 2010. Entry forms and full prospectus are available in the RAA office or online.

Deadline to submit entries: end of August 2010.
