“Rockaway Artists Unframed” is an extraordinary collection of black and white photographic portraits by Yuri Yurov of more than 125 artists who live and/or work in Rockaway. A brilliant artistic achievement, it is meant, equally, to be an historical document that preserves and reveals images of visual, performing and literary creative people who have influenced the character of our peninsula and have been influenced and inspired by the place they have chosen to gather. Steadily, perhaps subtly their numbers grow – actors, dancers, painters, sculptors, writers, musicians have found their way to this peninsula; or have been born and remained or returned here. Among them are young actors of the Rockaway Theatre Company; veterans like RTC Artistic Director John Gilleece; kidsmART teen assistants; master printmaker Christian Le Gars, who will be bringing fellow master printmakers to Rockaway to teach a workshop. And those not affiliated with one particular group. All are among the 125.
Yurov is an award-winning artist accomplished in many mediums. He is on exhibit internationally. For Yurov “Rockaway Artists Unframed” began simply as portraits of a few of his artist friends. As those portraits grew in number, he realized that this could be a project with a much greater goal. The project defined itself.
All the portraits have the same setting, lighting and format. All are printed by the artist using high quality materials and techniques to produce crystal clear images. What changes is the subject. What is revealed by the art of the photographer, what emerges is the life, energy, spirit and the indefinable creative force that emanates from each.
