Nice Weather Sparks 8th Annual Graybeard Family Run

After last year’s rain, beautiful weather returned to Belle Harbor last Friday night for the 8th Annual Graybeards Family Run, and so did the throngs of runners. It was a great evening as over 400 runners participated in the various races. The children started the action and packed Rockaway Beach Boulevard as they sprinted, accompanied by Sponge Bob, Elmo, and other characters, to the cheers of their parents, grandparents and friends.

The Special Olympians once again inspired with their high spirited dash along the boulevard. The 1- Mile Race followed and the runners were excited by the crowds at Family Fun Night and the music of Solshyne as they made their turn at Beach 121 and the boardwalk.

Helen Tolan, with a time of 5:50, came in just ahead of Matt McDade (5:52) to take the trophy. The 5K followed and in addition to the energy lift provided at Beach 121 Street, the runners were spurred on by a lonely bagpiper at Beach 108 Street as the race reminded many of the NYC Marathon (just shorter!). Phillip O’Connell broke the tape in 17:59 with Rockaway running legend Jim McVeigh placing second, and Patrick Goldberg was third. Krystal Cosenza won the Female division followed by Judy Aiken and Bridget Hillier.

Everyone returned to the St. Francis schoolyard where hamburgers, hot dogs, and drinks were plenty, rides and games entertained the young ones, and the Gray Riders blew away the yard with a two-hour set featuring the Downtown Horns. The Awards Ceremony and the always popular raffles concluded the night.
