First Champions Awarded At St. Francis Classic
Team C captured the first championship of the 2010 St. Francis Summer Classic as they ran away from Team A to take the Graybeards Legends Division title. MVP Kevin Boyle was joined by Brian King, Kevin Kennelly, Joe Mc- Cormick, Mike Morley, Kevin Hurley, Jim Dunn and Poppa Graybeards Steve Stathis in being the first to show off this year’s championship tees.
The Young Guns final game followed in front of a packed house. Team 2 pulled out to a quick lead as nothing was falling for Team 5. Just as all seemed lost, Billy Collins started connecting from downtown to make it a game. Team 2 regrouped with the trio of Tim Harkins (MVP), PJ Jamin, and Rick Ferro to hold on for the win. Teammates JoJo O’Grady, Derek McCarthy, Kevin Ward, Ed Martinson and Kevin Judge were also instrumental and celebrated together at The Wharf afterwards.
Rockaway Jetty still leads the way as the Boys Grammar Junior headed into their final night of play. Belle Harbor Chemists finished 8-1 to top the Girls Grammar Junior division. Boys Grammar Middle playoffs begin on Monday with Rockaway Little League and the Melons battling for the top seed. Quarterfinals continue on Tuesday with semifinals on Wednesday and the championship scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 17.
It’s a four-way battle in Boys Grammar Senior with Denis O’Connor, JG Electric, B R S, and Kill, Wood, Ace and Mann all with two losses. Their playoff schedule is the same as the Boys Grammar Middle, except their championship is at 8:15 p.m. on August 17. The Graybeards gave The Wave their first loss on Tuesday night and could edge them out for top seed by winning their final two games. Quarterfinals are August 9-10. Semifinals are August 11, and the championship is set for 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 19.
The Girls Grammar Senior Championship was scheduled for Wednesday with strong favorite T. Moriarty and Son taking on Rockaway W.I.S.H. The Girls High School schedule has now been settled. Games this week are on Friday followed by an intense week beginning August 16, semifinals are August 23 and the championship is August 25.
Erin White has taken the lead in Women’s Open A. Semifinals are Thursday, August 12 and the championship is Wednesday, August 18 at 8:15 p.m. Boardwalk Bagel was upset by Bungalow Bar but still holds first in Women’s Open B. Semifinals are Tuesday, August 10 and the final is at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 18.
Quigley Insurance and Caiazzo Plumbing both won to remain tied in Men’s Open. Regular season play continues next Thursday. Quarterfinals are on Monday, August 16 with semifinals on Wednesday, August 18 and the championship at 8:15 p.m. on Thursday, August 19.
