Mary F. Oliphant

Community Activist

Mary F. Oliphant, 76, a longtime Rockaway resident, died July 21.

Oliphant was born on July 30, 1933 in Suffolk, Virginia and worked as a longtime community activist. She was a member of St. Paul’s Baptist Church, chairperson for the election board in the Democratic party of Inwood, New York for 20 years, and a lifetime member of the NAACP.

Oliphant was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, James Thomas Goodman; daughter, Tomasine Louella Knight; and son, Myron Darnell Oliphant.

She is survived by her children, Leon of Bay Shore, New York, Diane of Far Rockaway, Michael (Jennifer), Patricia, Tanya of Inwood, New York, and Renie of Takoma Park, Maryland; 24 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; siblings, Virginia Warren, Marian Anderson, Evangelist Patricia Brown, Boone (Ronald), Elder Bobby Goodman (Kassandra), Raymond Goodman Sr. (Laura), Alvin Goodman Jr. (Beverly) all of Suffolk, Virginia, Hugh Goodman Sr. (Christine) of North Babylon, New York, Rev. Catherine Whittington of Deer Park, New York, and Prophetess Evelyn Brown (James) of Wichita Falls, Texas; seven sisters-in-law and two brothersin law; and a special family friend and prayer partner, Elder Bernicestein Smith; a caring church family and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney Friendship Chapel, Inwood, New York. Visitation and mass took place at Community Church of God, Arverne. Interment took place at Plainlawn Cemetery, Hicksville, New York.
