Supervisor NYC Department of Parks

Johon B. McAvoy Sr., a longtime Rockaway resident, died August 2.

McAvoy was born in Brooklyn, New York and lived in Rockaway for 75 years, working as a supervisor for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. He was member of the Knights of Columbus (Council 2671) and usher in St. Rose of Lima parish.

McAvoy was preceded in death by his wife, Helen.

He is survived by his sons, John and Terance; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Denis S. O’ Connor Funeral Home, Rockaway Beach. A mass took place at St. Rose of Lima Church, Rockaway Beach. Interment followed at St. Mary Star of the Sea Cemetery, Lawrence, New York.
