Bridge Toll Increases

By Nicholas Briano
Less than a month after Rockaway and Broad Channel residents watched the longtime Cross Bay Bridge rebate vanish, the MTA has announced plans to raise the fares in 2011, according to reports.

The MTA has plans to increase bus, subway, and crossing tolls statewide. Rockaway and Broad Channel residents are looking at an increase from $1.13 to $1.24 per trip, while the cash toll will go up 25 cents to $3.00. Non-Rockaway residents with an E-Z Pass are looking at a toll increase from $1.71 to $1.88.

The MTA is also proposing raising the subway and bus fares to $2.50 and eliminating the 14-day and one-day unlimited Metrocards.

The increase and another, scheduled for 2013, come as a result of the MTA bailout agreement made last year with Governor David Paterson. The MTA states the agency’s expenses will rise by about 2.4 percent from this year to next due to increased pension costs, union salaries and rising debt payments.

Public hearings on the matter are expected to be announced soon and are likely be held in September, with a final MTA board vote in October.
