Last Saturday students from RWA’s summer youth program joined forces with Marlen Waaijer and Doris Harris of Norton Basin Edgemere Stewardship Group (NBESG) to clean the Jamaica Bay shoreline along Norton Basin. The area is part of a bird sanctuary NBESG has been working on for a number of years since migratory birds have been making their way here as the area has been restored to it’s natural beauty. Students have been working in this area during the week as part of a marine debris removal program sponsored by National Fish and Wildlife Fund and HEP. On Saturday they partnered with Waaijer and Harris to learn how to identify and remove some of the invasive species of plants that have taken over along the shoreline. After the clean up, RWA Educator Rebecca Schultz worked with the students to sample water and seine for fish along the bay.
