Thanks For Missing Richie

The following letter was sent to The Wave and to the residents of Broad Channel.

Dear Editor,

As most of you know, Richie Heaphy passed away suddenly and unexpectedly last Monday, July 19, at his home in Broad Channel.

His family members: Marie Heaphy, Kenny Heaphy, John Heaphy and Jackie Schilling; along with his inlaws: Judy Heaphy and Bill Schilling; in addition to all of his nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews, although mourning his loss, are deeply touched and gratified by the outpouring of love and affection for Richie by our neighbors and friends.

He was indeed a special individual. He dedicated his life to the care of his sister, Marie and still found time to be the honorary Mayor of the town. His City Hall was the All American Deli on 10 Road corner. He also was quite a walker, covering the distance from 10 Road to the bridge and back most days and many days more than once. Richie had a gift of gab and a perpetual smile. He cheered us all up.

We, his family, deeply appreciate all of the good wishes and kind words we still continue to receive from folks we didn’t even know he knew. It seems he knew just about everybody in town. Attendance at his viewing at Hillebrand’s was mobbed and many a tear was shed, in addition to many a smile and laugh, recalling a life well lived.

We miss him already. We are sure you do, too. Join us in loving him and remembering him in your thoughts and prayers. You can be certain he loved you back and continues to do so from a better place. If there is such a thing as a better place than Broad Channel!
