Night Out Against Crime This Tuesday

By Amanda Grannis

On August 3, Transit District 23, along with the 100 and 101 Precinct Community Councils, will be hosting the 27th annual National Night Out Against Crime. The annual gathering is an internationally celebrated event, carried out by thousands of precinct community councils across both the U.S and Canada.

The 101 Precinct Community Council event will take place from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with free barbeque and games held at Beach 17 Street on the Seagirt boardwalk. In addition, crime prevention programs will be presented.

The 100 Precinct Community Council celebration will also welcome family fun. The event is set to occur from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Beach 116 Street, right between the boardwalk and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The evening boasts a wide array of rides, face painting, caricatures, a fireworks show and live music.

Various law enforcement agencies will participate. Cop of the Year presentations will take place, honoring the late police officer Philip Clemens of the 100 Precinct and Police Officer David Spiegel of Transit District 23.

Council officials believe that nights hosted by both 100 and 101 Community Councils will allow Rockaway residents to display their gratitude for local officers.

“I encourage everyone to come and support all our law enforcement agencies,” says Danny Ruscillo, 100 Precinct Community Council president. “Remember they are there for you, come to this event and be there for them.”

If this year’s National Night Out Against Crime is in any way similar to those of the past, then it is sure to be a great, fun-filled success.
