PS-MS 183 Awards Pastor Joseph Medlin and First Congregational Church
At a recent Sunday worship service of First Congregational Church of Rockaway Beach, representatives of PS-MS 183 (The Richard R. Green School) on Beach 79 Street, visited to pay tribute to the efforts of the church and its pastor, Joseph Medlin. Jacqueline Stillwell, PS-MS 183 Parent Coordinator, and Lisa Cooper, president of the Parent Association, spoke to the congregation to present a certificate to, and salute the efforts of Pastor Medlin.
Shortly after arriving at the church as its new pastor early in 2008, Stillwell told the worshipers, Pastor Medlin walked into the school, which is located fifteen blocks from First Congregational, and asked if there was anything the church could do for them. He then began personally helping with the after-school Spirituality for Kids club, and also enlisted church members and the Rockaway community to donate prom dresses and suits, backpacks, uniforms and school supplies, to meet the needs of students and families. In return, the students and families of PS-MS 183 collected food for the First Congregational community food pantry in 2009.
The award presentation was applauded by members of the church, who thanked the Rockaway community for supporting all of the joint efforts by the church and the school. A summer collection is ongoing, and anyone wishing to donate new or lightly used uniforms or school supplies may bring the items to the church, at 320 Beach 94 Street, on Wednesday mornings from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Children need items such as marble composition notebooks, boxes of 24 Crayola crayons, number 2 pencils, backpacks and loose-leaf paper.
