Graybeards Host Annual Family Fun Run Friday

By Anne Marie Turner

On Friday, July 30, the Graybeards will host the Annual Family Fun Run that will take place on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 129 Street. Over the years the Family Fun Run has become one of the Graybeards’ most anticipated events of the summer.

Participants that did not pre-register must register Friday between 4 and 6 p.m. at St. Francis de Sales Church on Beach 129 Street. There they can also pick up their numbers and shirts.

The kick-off race begins at 6:30 p.m. with the kids’ races. The first race is a two-block run for all children under 7 years old, followed by a three-block race for children ages 8 to 10 years old.

At approximately 6:45 p.m. the Special Olympians race begins. At 7 p.m. the all-ages runs start, beginning with a onemile run. Finally at 7:15 p.m. the 5-kilometer race begins.

Awards will be given to the top five males and top five females that finish the one-mile race, and many awards will be given to the winners of the 5-kilometer race for separate age divisions.

All children that participate will receive a ribbon, even if their little legs do not carry them past the finish line.

The Graybeards will give out the awards at St. Francis following the races. Stay after the race for refreshments, raffles, and entertainment.

Last year about 250 men, women, and children came out to participate in the Family Fun Run, despite the fact that it was raining.

The races in 2007 and 2008 both boasted more than 500 runners. Hopefully, this year the heat will not scare off the runners because it is sure to be a lovely evening for the families of the Rockaways and Breezy Point.
