The Renzo Gracie Invitational is an annual Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament that attracts many of the most talented grapplers from some of the best schools around. The event was recently held at Hunter College in Manhattan, and drew almost 400 competitors – some traveling long distances to get there. A lot of great grappling was displayed on the mat that day.

Four local students from the Renzo Gracie Rockaway Jiu Jitsu Academy competed in the Renzo Gracie Invitational Tournament. The competitors were: Dominic Ryman, Sean Murphy, David Torres, and Tim Robinson. Despite facing more experienced opponents, all four competitors fared very well. Impressively, two of the four competitors earned third place medals in their divisions.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art based on safe and effective grappling techniques that utilize leverage and technique to overcome brute strength and aggression. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu does not employ strikes, punching or kicking.

Renzo Gracie is not only a grappling and mixed martial arts legend, but also a former professional surfer. His family created Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the early 1900s, and have been refining it ever since. BJJ has become one of the fastest growing sports in the world today. In addition to the sport aspect, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art with a strong emphasis on self defense and physical fitness.

Originally hailing from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Renzo Gracie began teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Manhattan in 1995. Since then, Renzo Gracie has inspired many of his ever-growing community of students to pass on their knowledge and passion of this martial art. Students of his system have started Renzo Gracie affiliated schools in such locations as Canada, Mexico, Singapore and Israel.

This past January, a Renzo Gracie school was opened on Beach 108 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. It offers Adult Beginner classes for students aged 13 and up, that emphasize self defense and physical fitness, as well as advanced Gi and No Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes.
