Rainouts Temporarily Halt St. Francis Summer Basketball Classic
The Summer Classic has been dealing with the extreme heat this July, but at least there have been no rainouts…. until now.
The rain finally came and cancelled most of the schedule this Tuesday and Wednesday. Dates for makeups are now set with many games scheduled for the next few Thursdays. In the Boys Grammar Junior division, Rockaway Jetty has jumped out to a 3-0 record.
Blue Bear Risk Management, Slices and Ices, and Mullin Basketball Camp follow closely behind at 2-1.
Rockaway Little League, with coach Marty Andresen, is 2-0, in Boys Grammar Middle Division play.
Cyberzone, Buckley’s Restaurant, Breen Electric, and the Melons are all 2-1.
B R S has established themselves as the favorites in Boys Grammar Senior with a 4-0 start. JG Electric, J&E Industries, and Kill, Wood, Ace & Mann are all 2-1. On the Girls side, Rockaway Beach Digital leads the Grammar Junior at 4-0 with Belle Harbor Chemists 3-1 and Betty Boops 2-2.
The lighting upgrade should be complete by press time and limited operation of the concession stand has begun. Full operation is hopeful for next week.
The Summer Classic is now in the heart of its schedule as the Girls High School division has now begun.
The Graybeard divisions meanwhile are beginning playoffs this Thursday July 22, with the championship scheduled for July 29.
The Summer Classic will be running Monday-Thursday with games at 5:45 p.m., 7:00 p.m., and 8:15 p.m.
Come catch the action, and even better, leave the car at home and walk or bike to the Fr. Grogan Memorial Schoolyard and St. Francis Gym.
