Historical Views of the Rockaways

The new P.S. 43 under construction in Far Rockaway – 1995
From The Rockaway Museum Commentary by Emil Lucev, Curator Dedicated To The Memory Of Leon S. Locke
This aerial view of Far Rockaway is a flashback to the 1990s, when the current Public School 43 was being built in Far Rockaway. The present Beach 29 and Beach 30 Street, running into Lewmay Road, are in the foreground. Above the school is Seagirt Boulevard, and Wavecrest Gardens at the top right.

The building of the school had early problems with water seeping into the basement area. Rumor had it that the navy was going to take it over for a submarine school. However, the Board of Education lined the walls of the basement similarly to that of a swimming pool, in reverse, to keep the water out of the basement.

Dozens of hotels and summer rental buildings once saturated this part of Far Rockaway, once known as Edgemere Crest when first developed in 1911.
