One of the many artworks in “A Salute to Rockaway,” in sTudio 7, RoCA, Fort Tilden. Opening this weekend is “A Salute to Rockaway.” The summer-style potluck reception is on Sunday, July 18, 12-4 p.m. The exhibit is on view Saturday, July 17 to Sunday, August 1. Admission to exhibit and events is free. Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays 12-4 p.m. and by appointment.

Come join RAA for a celebration of the natural beauty that is Rockaway and Broad Channel; the ocean, bay, marshes, wildlife, the people unique to our peninsula, the summers sweet, salty and cool. You’ve sampled Rockaway in among the works of other exhibits. Now, however, see Rockaway in its full dimensions; in so many of its moods.

Contributing to the informal reception will be live music at 1:30 p.m. and a presentation by the RAA Writers Group at 2 p.m. of original prose, music, poetry and short plays written, produced and performed by members of the group. Previous presentations by the group have included spontaneous musical performances, stand-up comedy and impromptu audience participation. Even the folks who attend our receptions are a talented group.

You want more? You’ve got it. From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., following the reception, the Writers Group holds its regular monthly meeting to which all are welcome. Itching to exercise those writing muscles of yours; to commune with fellow scribes; or to just be in on the creative literary loop? Come, enjoy.

This will be a firecracker summer at the RAA galleries. Three solo exhibitions will be on view in August. The weekend of August 14 and 15, “Matt’s Show” will feature the large comic acrylic paintings of Matthew Petagna, with a reception on August 14, 12-4 p.m. August 21 and 22 will present the longanticipated exhibit of photographic portraits by Yuri Yurov of Rockaway’s visual, literary and performing artists. Some surprises may be in store for you – artists you probably didn’t even know about. Rockaway has a thriving cultural population – those who live and/or work here. A Saturday evening reception brings a rare dimension to RAA’s reception schedule. Closing weekend of the month, on August 28 and 29, Arthur Skowran’s paintings, as well as musical performances, will be featured. Stay tuned for more details on all three exhibits.
