Action Begins At St. Francis Summer Classic

Despite the sultry conditions, the boys and girls were eager to compete at the St. Francis Summer Classic. Despite the sultry conditions, the boys and girls were eager to compete at the St. Francis Summer Classic. The St. Francis Summer Classic recently began its 26th season after a delayed start. This year’s Summer Classic comprises 88 teams in 13 divisions ranging from the coed Second Grade division to the Graybeards Legends division.

The Fr. Grogan Memorial Schoolyard has been repaved, and although schedules were adjusted to complete the work, it was necessary and has been well received. Lighting upgrades will be completed shortly and work on the office and concession shack is also under way.

The Second Grade Division is led this year by Phil Hughes and consists of Kimball Construction, Laurice Keating Real Estate, Breezy Point Lumber, O’Grady Plumbing, Carvel, and Flynn & Flynn.

John Moran guides the Boys Grammar Junior Division. The teams are T. Moriarty & Son, Rockaway Jetty, Blue Bear Risk Management, Mullin Basketball Camp, Irish Circle, Station Liquors, Kennedy’s Restaurant, and Slices and Ices.

Randy Neiswenter leads the Girls Grammar Junior Division of Rockaway Beach Digital Imaging, Belle Harbor Chemists, Betty Boops, Belle Harbor Yacht Club, R. Tyne Paiinting, and Belle Harbor Physical Therapy.

Game times for these three groups are at 5:45 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

At 7:00 p.m. and 8:15 p.m., the older players take the court. Peter Tuffey heads the Boys Grammar Middle Division on Court 4. Walsh Properties, Cyberzone, Melons, Rockaway Little League, Breen Electric, Adams & Company Real Estate, Boarders Surf Shop, Buckley’s Restaurant and Caterers, and McManus Mechanical are the competing teams.

Tom Morgan has moved up to the Boys Grammar Senior Division on Court 1. The teams are Ameritag, B R S, Thundering Herd, Kill, Wood, Ace & Mann Est. 1961, J & E Industries, W.J. Lachner Painting. Denis S. O’Connor, JG Electric, and The Storage Place.

Dan Edwards delivers the Boys High School Division on Court 2 with The Wave, Curran’s Superior Meats, Dr. Schilling’s POD’s, Twomey’s Boys, Graybeards, Orangemen, Walsh Properties, Treiber-Roberts, and Grayriders band.com.

John Blum handles the Girls Grammar Senior Division. The teams are T. Moriarty & Son, Harbor Optics, Ludwig’s Sand-Witches, Plum Tomatoes, Rockaway W.I.S.H., and Walter Blum’s Giants.

Keith Goldberg is organizing the Girls High School Division and play is expected to begin this coming Wed-nesday.

Ryan Whelan runs the Men’s Open Division and will play mostly on Thursday nights. Caiazzo Plumbing will defend their title against Quigley Insurance, Bungalow Bar, Jameson’s, Harbor Optics, Knights of Columbus, Ludwig’s Caterers/BHYC, Rock Park All- Stars, Only Shirts and Pants, and Belle Harbor Steakhouse.

Kenny Whelan supervises the Women’s Open A Division with The Wharf, Hot Mommas, Bayview, The Inn, Erin White, Chris Pagan, and Mary Bruns.

Bryanne Flaherty has stepped up for the Women’s B Division of Elegante Restaurant, Jameson’s, Harbor Light, Bungalow Bar.

Larry McGuire is the Grand Master of Graybeard Basketball. The Young Guns and the Legends bring back memories on Thursday nights in the gym. This year’s classic will run through the third week of August after the late start. So after the beach, head to the blacktop, to see the action, under the lights, in the St. Francis Summer Classic.
