Youth Committee Starts Summer Volleyball Program
With the summer bringing an end to the 100 Precinct Council Youth Committee’s Chess Club, the committee has started something new for kids, a Summer Volleyball Program on the Beach. Registration was held Tuesday, July 6 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Two tables were set up – one on Beach 119 Street, the other on Beach 91 Street on the boardwalk.
They registered 15 children with more to join. The ages range from 7 years old through 16 years old. The Youth Committee purchased two volleyball nets and balls, with the profits from their fundraisers. The kids appeared very excited to have a free activity to look forward to every Tuesday for a total of six weeks. Volleyball will not be held August 3, since it is National Night Out Against Crime.
This idea of the program was presented to the Youth Committee by Pat Wood, a member of the committee. A spokesperson says, “During these difficult fiscal times, when so many programs for children have suffered due to cutbacks, it is more important then ever to work as a community for kids.”
