Historical Views of the Rockaways

The Capped Edgemere/Arverne Landfill in 1995
From The Rockaway Museum Commentary by Emil Lucev, Curator Dedicated To The Memory Of Leon S. Locke
W ith Beach 48, Beach 49, and Beach 50 Streets (from right to left) crossing Beach Channel Drive in the Foreground (from left to right) we look over at Little Bay and Conch Basin on the West Side of the closed and capped garbage landfill in Edgemere.

At left center is the entrance to Somerville Basin and Dubos Point Wildlife Sanctuary, and Grass Hassock Channel Heading East to the Right. The JFK International Airport is seen at the background.

The landfill was closed in the 1980s, and work began to transform the site into a public park. Much of Jamaica Bay waterfront is off limits to the general public.
