Wounded Warrior Weekend On Way

Local residents await Wounded Warrior Parade last year. Local residents await Wounded Warrior Parade last year. The Wounded Warriors are once again on their way to Rockaway for a weekend of parades, watersports and fundraisers.

The annual event, sponsored by the Graybeards, will kick off with a parade east on Rockaway Beach Boulevard from Breezy Point to Beach 126 Street at about 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 8.

That parade is traditionally heavilyattended with people, flags and signs lining the boulevard.

After the parade, the participants, all soldiers and marines wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan, are treated to a private dinner at the Harbor Light restaurant on Beach 130 Street and Newport Avenue, where the warriors meet their host families for the first time.

The adaptive watersports festival will kick off on Saturday, July 9 at Breezy Point, a festival that enables permanently injured marines and soldiers to participate in water skiing, fishing and scuba diving.

To facilitate the event, a special div- ing tank is erected at Breezy Point and many locals donate their time and their boats to the event each year.

On Sunday, July 11, all of the 55 participants and their host families will be present at a fundraiser for the Special Olympics program at the home of Rita and Flip Mullen on the beach block of Beach 134 Street.

That fundraiser benefits both the Wounded Warrior Foundation and the Special Olympics.
