Drawing A Line In The Sand

June 26, at exactly noon, a group of about 150 people from the American Littoral Society, NYC Sierra Club and NYC Audubon, as well as local beachgoers joined hands in a line across the sand at Beach 94-96 Streets to show support for promoting alternative clean energy and protest against offshore drilling. Organized by Rock-away resident Janie Simmons, the group took part in a nationwide effort called “Hands Across the Sand,“ whereby people from every coastal state demonstrated against the big oil lobby and asked that more funding go toward developing solar, wind, electric and various other renewable sources of energy. “We need to get serious about increasing research and funding for alternative energy and not become complacent and return to business as usual as what happened in 1973 during the first oil crisis,” said Don Riepe, Jamaica Bay Guardian who helped with the event. Jill Weber, the Rockaway Administrator for the NYC Deptartment of Parks was on hand to show support for the event.
