Adventist’s Youth Group – A Haven For Local Youths

By Anne Marie Turner

The Solid Rock Church of Seventh- Day Adventist is more than a place of worship. The church is also a haven for the youth in the area. A major ministry of the church is the Adventist’s Youth Group, a communal place for young adults, ranging from13 to 20, to gather and talk. The group meets every Saturday after the church’s service to discuss the message of that day’s sermon, but also they gather to talk about the pressures and issues that affect young adults today.

“The church is a home base,” says Motisola Mutema, a 17-year-old active member of the youth program. “The AY group is crucial to the kids because it gives them a place to go.”

Mutema praises the AY group leader, Evita, for the success of the group. Evita plans the activities for the members. “She is great, she comes up with all of the hands-on activities that we do.” They conduct plays, moral activities, and open discussions to get the kids talking about hard topics in an open and comfortable forum.

The AY group also reaches out to their community with activities such as visiting nursing homes and cleaning the boardwalk. This AY group collaborates with other Seventh - Day Adventist churches and groups throughout the borough.

Mutema, who will be attending the University of Hartford in the fall, thinks that the AY group is important for her and her peers because it helps keep them on the right path. “The AY group gives the members a sense of understanding that God plays a huge roll.”

The group meets at 5 p.m. every Saturday after the church’s service at their Far Rockaway location. All youth in the area, of any faith, are invited to join the AY group’s discussions.
