Cubs Complete Late Rally To Defeat Angels
Throughout the Little League softball season, a game between the Major Girls Angels and the Cubs was guaranteed to be close; in the single-game elimination semifinals, these girls saved their most exciting game for last. The Cubs rallied for a 13-12 victory. They advanced to the finals against the first place Braves.
After both teams scored three in the first, the Angels’ Kristie Carey and the Cubs’ Renee Simos settled into a tight pitching duel. Carey struck out five in the second and third innings while Simos yielded just one hit in those frames.
Leading 4-3, the Angels grabbed control of the game in the fourth inning, batting around and scoring seven times. Kim Slyuk, Kristie Carey, Marina Cregan and Sam Scaccia had consecutive hits to fuel the outburst. The Cubs shaved three runs off the deficit in their half of the fourth thanks to Michelle Wrynn’s two RBIs.
The Angels extended their lead to 12-6 in the fifth inning when Kristie Carey scored her third run of the game. Both Carey sisters (Kristie and Julia) reached base four times and crossed the plate three times. With time running out, the Cubs bats finally came to life. Powered by Ginna Davan’s bases-loaded triple, the Cubbies grabbed the lead for the first time in the game. Davan’s blast to left plated Melissa Piccone, Jackie Banker and Morgan Koenig, giving Davan five RBIs on the day. After Jenny Fahy stole home to tie the game, Katie King doubled and scored on Simos’ hit, giving the Cubs a 13-12 edge. In the final frame, Fahy had two assists and a putout from the mound to earn the win in relief.
