Rockaway Students Learn About Water Safety

Students at PS 43 recently got a chance to board the CUNY on Wheels bus to take part in the first series of Ocean Lab NYC workshops hosted by the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance.

The workshops introduce the students, their teachers and families to a website dedicated to educating the public, and specifically local youth, to the basic principals of water safety. The website and curriculum was developed by local resident Jessica Klein who collaborated with RWA this year as part of her graduate thesis project at Parsons School of Design in MultiMedia Technology and Design.

During the course of the day, multiple classes of students boarded the CUNY on Wheels bus just outside their school to learn more about the Oceanlabnyc.com website. Each student was able to use his or her own computer screen to play the animated podcasts or videos and play some of the video games featured on the site to learn more about water safety. Afterwards the kids were brought onto the beach to talk about what they learned as they viewed the shoreline and to discuss the dangers of rip currents and ways to stay safe on the beach this summer.

RWA will be serving other Rockaway public schools throughout the spring with water safety workshops sponsored by Next Era Energy Resources. Any schools interested in hosting workshops for their students are encouraged to contact RWA at info@ rwalliance.org.
