Rockaway Author Publishes Her First Children’s Book
Stacey J.S. Haggerty founded her company, HYB Families Inc., after years of working as a project manager for a major accounting firm. Though she left her job in big business, she had full intentions of continuing to work. She needed inspiration to guide her to her next venture. Luckily, she didn’t have to look far, for she found her family was the inspiration she needed to create her company.
Coming from a multiracial family, Haggerty developed a social networking website, HYBFamilies.com, in 2008 devoted to multiracial and multicultural families. She wanted to create a place where families, like hers, and individuals that embrace diversity could meet and unite. The HYB in the company’s name stands for hybrid. “We are a blending of cultures and race. Hybrid is a combination of things working in tandem,” Haggerty relates.
The newest venture in her company comes in the form of her first children’s book. The idea for the book came to Haggerty when she had somewhat of an epiphany. Sitting up one night, she recalls, she looked down at her son and thought, “that he basically looked like an angel without wings.”
With the vision of her son, Haggerty decided to write “An Angel Without Wings.” The book, illustrated by Manuela Pentangelo, is “a journey of love, laughter, and family growth as they welcome their little one.”
Haggerty’s dream is for her book to be published around the world in different languages, but overall she hopes “for the book to be in every child’s hand and in every classroom.”
“I want for all children to feel loved, to embrace diversity, and to have my book be a source of happiness,” she says.
“An Angel Without Wings” is her first published book, but she already has three other books in the wings; “My Colorful Family Tree,” “Child of My Heart” and “Different Is Unique, Different Is Beautiful, Different Is Me!”
In promotion for her website and the publication of her children’s book, Haggerty and her company will hold an event, open to the public, at Fort Tilden on June 27 at 1 p.m. in RAA’s sTudio 7 Gallery. The family oriented event will feature readings, including her own work, a musical performance, a nonfire cooking show, multicultural food, and face painting for the children.
“An Angel Without Wings” is available at the site HYBBooks.com and later at Amazon.com on October 1, 2010.
