LIPA’s Life-Support Program

Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) wants residents to be aware of their Critical Care Program that helps them to identify customers who rely on lifesupport equipment, according to Assemblywoman Audrey I. Pheffer.

When a severe storm is forecast or some other event impacting reliability of service occurs, LIPA will call its critical care customers so they can make advance preparations. If outages do occur, every effort is made to restore electricity as quickly as possible.

“We know that there are more LIPA customers who should be enrolled in this program. It is imperative that those LIPA customers eligible for the program contact LIPA so that they can identify them,” said Pheffer.

Residents need to provide a medical certificate from their doctor or local Board of Health, so that LIPA can note the account and tag the meter “critical care.”

The following 11 devices meet the medical criteria for life-support equipment:
• Apnea Monitor
• Curraise Respirator
• Positive Pressure Respirator
• Suction Machine
• IV Feeding Machine
• Tank Type Respirator
• Respirator/Ventilator
• Hemodialysis Machine
• Rocking Bed Respirator
• Oxygen Concentrator
• IV Medical Infusion Machine
