Reather Thomas, 88, a longtime Rockaway resident, died May 29.
Thomas was born on May 5, 1922 in Florence, South Carolina and was a domestic worker and childcare provider who lived in Rockaway for more than 30 years.
Thomas was preceded in death by her brothers, James (Manson), Arthur, Clayton (Clee), Self-Eaddy (Son); sis- ters, Modesta and Rutha; someone very special to her, James McNeil; grandson, Montae; granddaughter, Arabia and a very close friend, Pauline McNeil.
She is survived by her children, Andre, Vincent, Mary, Martha and Addie Mae; non-biological son, Henry McNeil; son-in-law, Benjamin Adu; sister, Jabella Hinton from Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, Shahidah Thomas-Washington, Khaliah Aziz, Talibah Thomas, Arkim Thomas, Kyaisha Murray, MasterQuran Thomas, Rayquan Broomfield, Fatima Thomas, Sharkima Thomas and Rahquan Broomfield; grandson-in-law, Nekia (Rab) Washington; great-grandchildren, Nekia and Quron Washington, Saimya Thomas, Khalil Flowers, Myasia Thomas and Khaiser Bryant; relative and “road partner,” Mary (Louise) Jackson and a host of other relatives, friends and extended family.
Funeral arrangements and memorial service were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney Friendship Chapel, Inwood, New York. Interment took place at Spring Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Pamplico, South Carolina.
