Fix the Ferries

Dear Editor,

It is my understanding that there is $15 million available in federal funding as “capital” for the purchase of new ferries for the Rockaway/ Brooklyn/Manhattan line. Our ferry operators have explained that we do not need new ferries as they would be more expensive to run and our current ones are in good shape. What we need is “operational” funding and an understanding of usage needs from the public so the ferry can become more fiscally feasible and we can build ridership by providing a service within a time-table that is user friendly for all.

I understand that it is difficult to move monies from a “capital” to an “operational” budget, but just how difficult? If it takes an “act of Congress” then Congressman Weiner is the man to do it. It seems to me that where there is a will there is a way and the only way to save and improve our ferry service is to somehow make this money available in a constructive fashion.

I implore Congressman Weiner as a loyal constituent to do his best in implementing a transfer of these funds before they are wasted.
