Simon says...

Commentary From the Desk of Lew M. Simon, Democratic Dis trict Leader, 23rd A.D. Part B

As we write this column it has been 16 great years of pleasure and enjoyment to have served the public as District Leader of the 23rd A.D. Part B. We enjoy the daily calls and helping all who need us day and night.

We are asking all enrolled Democrats living west of Beach 95 Street through Breezy Point, the west side of Broad Channel and parts of Howard Beach and Ozone Park to help us. We need your signature on our reelection petition. This will enable our name to appear on the primary ballot. It is not a vote. If you don’t see our petition or want to volunteer to help, call 718-945- 1216. Enrolled Democrats in the same area are needed to serve as Election Inspectors on Primary Day, Tuesday September 14 and on Election Day. The pay is $200 per day. Openings are available in Howard Beach and Ozone Park.

Our next Atlantic City bus trip will be on Saturday June 26. The cost is $40 with $30 returned. We leave at 5:30 PM and return at 7 AM. Bagels are courtesy of Beach Bagels. Call my office for reservations.

Special late thanks to Ruben of Amstel Auto Body for doing a superb job after my auto accident. He put my car back together again better than brand new. If you ever, God forbid, have a traffic accident, go to Ruben at Amstel, Beach 71 Street and Beach Channel Drive.

We are very disillusioned that Mayor Bloomberg is attempting to cut back on and even close some local libraries. Our libraries are one of our best resources especially in bad economic times. They also serve as cooling centers, safe havens and a place to read newspapers and magazines without charge. We also want to be on record against closing any firehouses in the city. Closed firehouses mean slower response times when even a few seconds delay can be fatal.

We’d like to congratulate the Queens County Democratic Organization on designating Jamie Plunkett for State Committeewoman in the 23rd A.D. I placed her name in nomination. Jamie has worked for the Queens County Organization for more than 25 years. She is a class act. She is always there and does the right thing for the 23rd A.D. Her mother, Mary Lu, has instilled the right family values in her. Jamie will be a great addition to our political community in the 23rd A.D. We welcome her with open arms.

MTA Chair Jay Walder should be ashamed of himself for failing to come up with a plan to restore the Rockaway rebate on the Crossbay Bridge toll. Our representatives, Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer, and State Senators Shirley Huntley and Malcolm Smith must see that the legislature puts money in the MTA budget and mark it for the Crossbay Bridge toll rebate.

Shame, shame on Mayor Bloomberg for taking care of the rich, but forgetting about the poor families who need help to feed their families.
