Gallagher Named As 2010 Atlantic 10 Academic All-American
Fordham University junior Kerri Gallagher (Belle Harbor/Bishop Kearney) was recognized along with graduate student Brigid Moriarty (Manchester Center, Vt./Burr and Burton Seminary), and senior John Korevec (Neenah, Wisc./Xavier) for their athletic and academic accomplishments by being named to the 2010 Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team for outdoor track and field in a vote by the conference’s Sports Information Directors.
It is the third academic award this year for Moriarty, who was also named Academic All-Conference for cross country and indoor track, and she becomes the first female student-athlete (third overall) at Fordham to earn all three academic honors in the same season.
Gallagher, who was named Academic All-Conference for indoor track, picks up her second Atlantic 10 Academic accolade of the year and Korevec his first.
To be nominated for Academic All-Conference honors, a player must be a starter or important reserve and have a cumulative 3.0 gpa or better (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her entire academic career.
The Belle Harbor native competed along with Moriarty for an NCAA Championship berth at North Carolina A&T’s Irwin Belk Track on May 27. It was the first time Fordham has had two female athletes reach the NCAA Regional in the same season. Gallagher finished 32nd out of 48 runners overall in the 800-meter competition, which put her ahead of runners from Dartmouth, Connecticut, UAB, Notre Dame, Michigan State and other schools.
The Math major won the 800m at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships in an Atlantic 10 record time of 2:09.08 to earn First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors. Gallagher also won the 800m at the 2010 Met-ropolitan Outdoor Championships.
