Sadness Over Beach 116 Street

Dear Editor,

I read the Opinions column of the April 30 edition, “A Bad Sign for Rockaway’s Renaissance,” with sadness.

I was born and raised in Rockaway and eventually moved out of state.

Many of my family members have remained in Rockaway and I visit the area often.

I am now moving back to New York and would really like to buy a home in Rockaway. However, I regret that I could not even consider purchasing property in the Rockaway area due to the appalling state of our main shopping district, Beach 116 Street. While we have beautiful homes, nice families and lovely beaches, I am not willing to shop for my groceries and other necessities on a street full of dilapidated SRO hotels, drunks and panhandlers.

What a shame the city is allowing this seaside community to waste away.

YVETTE RENDA
