Rockaway Outdoors/Tales From The Wheelhouse
Jamaica Bay is as hot as Satan’s hoof for the moment, which by the way is a line from Moby Dick, for you classics buffs. Big cow bass have invaded just about every corner of the bay and are feeding ferociously. Drop a bunker down on any given piece of bottom and chances are you’ll hook up. Aboard the Karen Ann anglers have been limiting out on fish into the forty pound range on a daily basis, and with the moon being full this week it can only get better.
Shore bound anglers are also getting in on the action as the vantage points along the bay are home to the surfcasters clad in waders with their big sticks. I parked in the lot on the south side of the North Channel Bridge on Monday eating a burger and watched as bluefish with bass were caught by those fishermen casting bunker chunks into the channel.
The rock piles and stretch of beach from Breezy to the fifties in Rockaway has also been the scene for some nice bass catches too. Apparently that big ocean run of fish has cooled off for the moment, however down south toward the Shrewsbury rocks some schools of bunker have been yielding some big bass to those fishing among them.
It’s only a matter of time before they too hit our shore. Fluke appeared also in the bay and those diligent enough are able to cull out a few keepers. But for the moment, everyone seems to be embracing this run of bass, and really who can complain; jumbo fish and plenty of them here in our own backyard.
