Argentina Claims Second Grade Title
It was a great game from both teams, which was played on a cold and windy evening. Shane Collins opened the scoring for Argentina early in the first half. Ryan Fitzgerald and Terrance Moriarty were outstanding for Argentina, moving the ball and setting up teammates scoring opportunities. Thomas Willis, Shawn O’Keefe and Terrance Flynn played flawless defense in breaking up several great scoring attempts with some outstanding defensive plays. Edward McCarthy-Coyne, Patrick Powderly and Tomas Charles rotated between midfield and forward and did a great job moving the ball.
Justin Colleran, Tim McEnroe and Phillip Benoit controlled midfield, moving the ball up field and preventing England from attacking. Nino Falcone was solid in goal. The game went back and forth until England scored with just seconds to play in the second half.
After two scoreless overtime periods, the teams went to a shootout. The goalkeeper, James Fox for Argentina, and his counterpart John Baroudas for England were both outstanding in the shootout.
The championship winning goal, and the only score of the shootout, was netted by Conor Powers on a blast to the upper left corner of the net. Special thanks go to Argentina coaches Tom Powers and Jennifer Collins and to all of the parents who supported the team throughout the season.
