Many thanks to the five talented musicians of the Quintet of the Americas, composer Christopher Kaufman and environmental artist Ken Cro-Ken for appearing at the Rockaway Center for the Arts on Sunday, May 16. If you have been reading this column, you know that the quintet commissioned a series of musical works by contemporary composers inspired by the The Mannahatta Project of landscape ecologist Dr. Eric Sanderson of the Wildlife Conservation Society. The project recreates the natural environment of Manhattan 400 years ago, comparing it in fascinating reconstructions to the island’s present day environment. Kaufman himself conducted the quintet in his piece, “Hudson Valley Quintet,” which included an interplay between the instruments and recorded sounds of the environment and the animals that inhabited 17th century Manhattan. The audience in sTudio 7 sat transfixed throughout the performance. As a bonus, Ken Cro-Ken, the artist whose environmentally influenced painting graces the album cover of “Hudson Valley Quintet,” brought slides and reproductions of many of his works and discussed the techniques and philosophy behind them. It made one perceive the relationships among art, the palpable world around us, the forces of nature and their metaphysical qualities in a whole new way.

A discussion by the participants and responses to questions from the inquisitive audience members rounded out a most satisfying afternoon. Websites to be sure to check out are: wwwquintet. org; www.kencroken.com; wwwchkaufman. com; www.theman-nahattaproject. org

If you go to the quintet’s website you can check out their Mannahatta Series concerts, which include an appearance on June 5 at the Waterfront Museum in Brooklyn at which Dr. Sanderson will be part of the panel discussion.
