Mildred D. Scanlon, a lifelong summer Rockaway resident, died May 14.

Scanlon was born in Manhattan, New York and worked as a teacher for more than 30 years, mostly for the Medford, New Jersey public school system where she spent 25 years. She was past President and President Elect of the Medford Education Association and was an active instructor at the Regional Training Center in Morristown, New Jersey.

She is survived by her husband, Robert R. Hemp Jr.; daughters, Katherine T. Lennon and Dr. Christine M. Lennon; sister, Marion Alfano (John); stepson, Brandon R. Hemp; stepdaughter, Kristen H. Woods; stepgrandchildren, Keira and Kayla.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home, Rockaway Beach. A funeral mass took place at St. Camillus Church, Rockaway Park. Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery, Woodside, New York.
