Bayside Beach Gets Cleanup Of Floatable Debris

Members of the American Littoral Society, students from John Bowne High School and Rick Horan from Gateway Bike and Boathouse joined forces last weekend to clean the Gateway NRA bayside beach next to the Breezy Point Yacht Club. The cleanup was organized by volunteer Kenny Gutierrez and Barbara Cohen. Kenny also brought some food and drink for the volunteers. Together the group removed about 500 pounds of floatable debris including many bags of recyclable bottles.

Thanks go to teacher Tamara Stanford for bringing a nice group of 14 young students to help out. Removal of this debris will allow for a safer landing when the horseshoe crabs come ashore to lay eggs during the next few weeks. The next major cleanup of all beaches around Jamaica Bay is scheduled for Saturday, September 25 during the International Coastal Cleanup Day.
