RBVL Ramps Up For Opening Day

Opening Day Only Weeks Away
By Joe McGivney

The final Rockaway Beach Volleyball League pre-season meeting was held on Wednesday, April 22 and that’s when the hard work began for the RBVL committee. 59 out of 60 teams returned from last season, leaving only one spot open for the many teams on the waiting list.

After lengthy deliberation, the committee chose to admit all nine squads who were anxiously awaiting news of their fate. This decision was made with much trepidation. More equipment must be purchased; more referees have to be found, nets will have to be set up much further down on the beach.

All the new players assured RBVL President Patty Moule that they would do whatever it took to help the season run smoothly. They all volunteered in advance to help in any way that was needed on and off the beach. That same spirit will be needed from all the veterans as well. Your league has become the place to be during the summer in Rockaway.

Remember that has happened primarily because of great camaraderie and sportsmanship more than great bumps, sets and spikes, although they are nice, too.

Because of the enormous task of running this large mass of humanity out there every week, the league is now officially capped.

There will be no further expansion in upcoming years, which means there no longer is a waiting list. If you are not on a team and you are looking to play, you should make a friend, date a current player or maybe even think about marrying into the league.

The 2010 season will feature 8 different divisions with varying levels of skill. Look for 2009 champs, Sugar Bowl, Flip Cup All-Stars, Brooklyn Windows and Doors, the Bay House Babes, 3rd and Long NYC, Sets on the Beach, Coral Reefers and Atlantic Service Sand Storm to come back and defend their titles with runners-up, Freedhands, Big Mahooshkas, Sand Spikers, JG Electric, the Snotty Yachties, Average Joe’s, Bad News Bears and Last Call nipping at their heels.

You can mark a few additional special dates on your calendars already. Wednesday, May26 will be the first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night for all and uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate as it did last year. Wednesday, June 2 will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until August 14.

On Saturday, August 14, the league championships will be played – keep your schedules clear.

Every year it’s a blast! Finally, it’s never too early to plan for the RBVL Awards Dinner. By popular demand, this year’s celebration will be moved from September to August, a week or so after the playoffs (The tentative date is August 20). Details will follow shortly.

Prospective new referees are always welcome and can contact the league officers via the website.

You do not need to be a certified ref to work in the RBVL. In fact, many refs have been quite successful with a strong playing background (college and high school) and limited referee experience.

Remember, the RBVL is now on Facebook but unfortunately we don’t twitter. It will only be a short few weeks before opening day arrives and there is still much to be done beforehand. If you have any questions before the meeting please call Patty Moule on her cell phone, 917-613-0908.

Call between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. See you on the beach.
