Beach Channel Looks Ahead To Playoffs
John Sullivan made sure to attend the PSAL boys’ tennis meeting which was held at presstime on May 13.
The reason why the Beach Channel boys’ tennis coach made his way to the PSAL offices in Long Island City was to lobby his team as one of the top seeds in the boys’ tennis C Division League playoffs which starts next week.
The Dolphins enjoyed a fine season which they finished with an 11-1 record and won the C1 Division. In defeating second place Campus Magnet (10-2) twice this season, Beach Channel should get one of the top seeds. “I’m going to the meeting hopefully to get a bye for my team. I think we’re better team than we were a few weeks ago,” Sullivan said.
The Beach Channel coach still has a cautious attitude and does not want his team to get too overconfident. Last season, the Dolphins encountered similar success with a 10-2 record and expected to get deep into the playoffs. They were eliminated in the first round.
“My guys are intent on playing well and they are pumped,” Sullivan said. “But we felt that way last year and we got beaten.”
While the team gets prepared for a possible first round game on Monday, four members of the team will compete in the PSAL Doubles Tournament on Saturday. Sharif Ellis and Julian Morales, the team’s top singles players, will pair up. Frantz Gedeon and Curtis Blocker, Beach Channel’s top doubles team, will also compete at JFK High School in the Bronx.
Lady Dolphins Playoff Bound
The playoff bound Beach Channel/ Channel View Lady Dolphins lacrosse team finished their PSAL campaign on May 11 with an 18-0 victory over A. Phillip Randolph Campus.
The Lady Dolphins ended the regular season on a three game winning streak to finish with a 10-2 record. Tottenville topped Beach Channel as the South Division champions with an 11-1 record. At press time, the PSAL held their playoff seeding meeting for the eight teams that qualified for the postseason.
Beach Channel will qualify them for the second playoff spot. They will host their first round playoff game against Stuyvesant (3-9) record on Monday afternoon.
If Beach Channel wins against Stuyvesant, the Lady Dolphins will host the Midwood or Cardozo winner on Thursday. The championship game will take place on May 22 at Aviator Sports Complex.
The Beach Channel Lady Dolphins hope to complete a fine PSAL B regular season by winning their final game at presstime against Far Rockaway on May 13.A victory would give the Dolphins a 12-3 record, and would place them as runners up in the Queens B1 Division to Queens High School of Teaching (13-3).
The seeding meeting will be held Sunday for the PSAL A and B girls division. The first round of the B playoffs are on Thursday.
