30th Anniversary Buckley’s–Kennedy’s 5K Charity Run This Sunday

The 30th Anniversary Buckley’s – Kennedy’s 5K Charity Run will take place at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 16. Beginning on the boardwalk at Riis Park in Rockaway, Queens, and ending at Kennedy’s Restaurant in Breezy Point, the Run will benefit HeartShare Human Services of New York.

The 5K Run is always dedicated to the memory of loved ones who recently have passed away. This year’s Run is dedicated to the memories of William Joseph Polanco Jr., Brendan James McCarthy and Jimmy Cassidy.

Polanco Jr. was 6 weeks old when he mysteriously, suddenly and tragically died. He left behind his twin and two-year-old sisters. Equally incomprehensible and tragic, McCarthy was three years old when he died in a household accident, leaving behind his four-year-old sister and six-year-old brother. Cassidy, a longtime run volunteer, died after a long battle with an illness.

The Buckley and Casey families and the organizers of the Run believe that this is an appropriate and respectful way to honor each of their lives, and at the same time, help children and young adults with autism throughout the community. They are deeply moved and appreciative that the families graciously offered their names to this effort and the Run.

The run will start on the boardwalk near Bay 9 Mall in Riis Park, cross Fort Tilden and wind through the streets of Breezy Point to the finish line at Kennedy’s Restaurant. Following the Run will be the Family Fun Day Picnic, open to the runners, their families and the general public.

It will feature live entertainment by the high energy dance band, Head Over Heels, and DJ Suds, along with food and drinks, games, rides, and pee wee races.

The picnic is free to runners and children 12 and under. For those 13 and older, the cost is $10 per person. The run begins at 10 a.m. and the picnic begins at 11 a.m.

HeartShare provides needed services for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, as well as other at-risk children, adults and families. To register for the Run, to make a donation in memory of Polanco Jr., McCarthy or Cassidy, or to volunteer for the event, visit www.heartshare.org/run.
