Buildings, Con Ed Launch Cool Roofs Program
Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri and the City’s Chief Service Officer, Diahann Billings-Burford, have joined Con Edison Vice President of Facilities Saddie L. Smith and City University of New York’s LaGuardia Community College President Dr. Gail O. Mellow to launch NYC °Cool Roofs Program, a citywide effort to cool one million square feet of rooftop with reflective, white surfaces this year, reducing energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions.
Others partners of the NYC °Cool Roofs Program who attended the event include Department of Citywide Administrative Services Commissioner Martha K. Hirst, New York City Housing Authority Chairman John Rhea and Richard Cherry, president and Chief Executive Officer of the Community Environmental Center, which provides the program’s logistical support.
Commissioner LiMandri and Department of Buildings employees join NYC Service volunteers to coat more than 46,000 square feet of La- Guardia Community College’s rooftop, the first of three buildings being cooled. This program will fulfill the promise Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg made in his 2010 State of the City address and will help meet one of the City’s PlaNYC goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030.
