Thrilling Finishes Highlight Rockaway Little League Action
In Major Girls softball, the Cubs continued their offensive onslaught, scoring 83 runs over three games. After dropping a highly-entertaining 24-22 contest to the Angels, the Cubs prevailed in the rematch on Thursday.
It was another tight battle. With the score 14-13 entering the final frame, the Cubs broke the game open with a massive rally. Winning pitcher Renee Simos blasted a three-run homer in the sixth inning. Kelly Davan (six hits) homered earlier and had a fine game at third base. Jenny Fahy scored six runs. Ginna Davan got the save.
On Saturday, the Cubs got off to a fast start against the Braves and coasted to victory. Fahy did the most damage at the plate, cracking two home runs. Lisa Pelligrini scored four runs. Renee Simos got the win and Lauren Durante the save. Morgan Mack did a fine job in her first pitching assignment for the Braves. Daisy DeMasi reached base and had a putout in her first career game.
The Reds won 7-5 over the Giants in a tight battle for their first win of the season. The Reds displayed great pitching from Timmy Connolly, TJ Powderly and Kevin Strehle. The Reds came back in a rally ignited by Riley Siederman’s first ever inside the park home run. Tommy Woods made two sterling defensive plays to keep the Reds close. Kevin Strehle hit a bases clearing triple to put the Reds ahead for good. Joe Braskey was caught eating a knish in the dugout.

On Friday evening, Rose’s Reds got their first win of the season by taking down the Rockaway Jetty Giants in a back and forth contest. Breandan Vazquez started his first game of the season for the Giants and was solid giving up two runs over three innings while Timmy Connelly, TJ Powderly and Kevin Strehle all pitched the Reds to victory.
James McManus and Noel Van Parys provided the bulk of the Giants’ offense going a combined 4 for 5 at the plate getting all five RBIs. Connelly sparked the Reds with three runs scored while going 2 for 2 and having a couple of RBIs for the Big Red Machine. Despite being up 4-2 in the fourth inning, the Giants went down as the Reds mounted an exciting come from behind victory and won 7-5.
On Saturday the Rockaway Jetty Giants and the Trident Marine Cardinals squared off in an entertaining contest. Josh Zweifler started for the Giants and pitched three strong innings. Zweifler also contributed by relaying a throw from the outfield to steal a run away from the Cardinals as Joe Braskey made the catch and slapped the tag on Kevin Erhard at the plate. Luke Erhard pitched a solid two innings as the starting pitcher for the Cardinals before departing.
The offensive stars for the Giants were Luca Bartoli who was 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI, Joe Braskey was 1 for 1 with a triple and Marcus Ortiz added firepower going 2 for 2 tallying 3 RBIs. Teddy Stathis countered going 3 for 3 for the Cardinals with a HR and 2 RBIs. The game ended 7-6 in favor of the Giants as Braskey struck out 9 batters over 3 innings from the mound and striking out the last batter of the game with the bases loaded.
