One Lane Bummer

Dear Editor,

Somebody in the Department of Transportation must have a relative in the paint business because taking away a lane is their knee-jerk solution to any problem.

They’ve already done it on virtually every one of Rockaway’s east - west arteries including; Beach Channel Drive (east end), Rockaway Freeway, Rockaway Point Boulevard, Rockaway Beach Boulevard and most recently, Shore Front Parkway.

The DOT now has its sights set on our critical north - south link with the mainland, Cross Bay Boulevard. They are proposing the removal of two lanes (one in each direction) in an effort to slow down traffic. You would think that an agency responsible for transportation would be look- ing for ways to safely speed up the flow of traffic, not slow it “ down. It already takes forever to get off the peninsula to the east, now they want to thwart northern travel. Seriously folks, how much more can we take?

Apparently the DOT is in the process of scheduling a meeting in Broad Channel to get community input on this cockamamie idea. Let’s show up in force as we did for the ferry meeting on April 20 and give them an earful! Let’s tell them what they can do with their rollers and white paint! Let’s tell them that we want our roads back!
