Parks, RWA Host Earth Day Rockaway Celebration

The weather couldn’t have been better for last Saturday’s 4th Annual Earth Day Rockaway event hosted by the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation.

Everything came together off Rockaway beaches to celebrate our local environmental resources. An RWA spokesperson wishes to say thanks to all those who came out to help including more than 100 students from PS/IS 43, Kappa VI, Frederick Douglas Academy and PS/IS 105 who volunteered throughout the day. She further says, “Il Collectivo Jazz Quartet was the perfect match for this year’s event, with vocals by Malian artist Makane Kouyate. The weather also brought hundreds of people out to enjoy the free workshops and activities including Ludger Balan from the Urban Diver’s Estuary Conservancy who led the raptor demonstration, as well as the Urban Rangers who brought a surprise guest.”

At the event, RWA kicked off the Ocean Lab NYC water safety curriculum developed by Animator Jessica Klein. The website www.oceanlabnyc.com showcases a curriculum for kids, families and teachers to help keep people of all ages safe on our beaches. This theme was clearly present at this years earth day event as USLA, Surfrider Foundation, Swim Strong Foundation and Skudin Surf all came to present materials supporting water safety and many led demonstrations on the beach to help inform the public. “Overall,” RWA says, “the event was a great success and helped to raise awareness of the natural resources just off our shores.”
