Pumping Pork

Dear Editor,

NYC Parks spent all winter bulldozing sand into the sea from Beach 92 Street to Beach 108 Street in Rockaway. Now the Corps of Engineers is going to pump it back. Then Parks will “groom” it again. So what’s my beef? After all, everyone’s getting a paycheck, right? Yet NYC is now going to lay off thousands of teachers for lack of money. This is “pork barrel” spending at its best. Representative Weiner is starting a four-year “study” to find a permanent solution to the erosion, but his $1.4 million sand will be washed away by next winter, literally money “down the drain.“ The pumping won’t extend to Beach 103 – Beach 108 Street, so the ocean will still reach the boardwalk there, and that beach will be closed.

A wealthy Neponsit resident is still suing the city to remove the dunes that kept the March 13-15 tides from that kept the March 13-15 tides from coming down his “ street. Money don’t make brains. The saying has never been more true: the lunatics are running the asylum.
