Public School 47 Students Become Opera Stars For L’Etoile

On Monday, April 12 the fifth-grade students at P.S.47 presented an original production based on the opera “L’Etoile” by Chabrier. The opera has been a term project for all the grades 2 to 5.

They have worked with staff and performers from The New York City Opera which included seeing the actual performance at Lincoln Center. This program was fully sponsored by Rockaway Music and Arts Council.

With an audience of enthusiastic P.S. 47 students and teachers the performers, under the direction of their teachers Kathy Ruggiero (Art and Music) and Julia Daudelin (fifth grade), wrote and performed dances, gave power point presentations, conducted interviews with characters, presented newscasts and performed a rousing song in French and English as a finale.

The school corridor was impressively decorated with original masks in addition to art and math projects connected to the opera.

Principal Janet Donohue and Assistant Principal Ann Moynagh were obviously proud of their students as were the Rockaway Music and Arts Council’s School Programs Coordinators Myra Berger and Bernice Myers, and RMAC President and photographer, Stephen Yaeger.
