Summer Youth Employment Applications Available
Applications for the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), run by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development, are now available online at www.nyc.gov/dycd and at the District Offices of New York City Councilmember Eric A. Ulrich, located at 93-06 101 Avenue in Ozone Park and 98-16 Rockaway Beach Boulevard in Rockaway Park.
SYEP will once again offer work experience, teach valuable employment skills and provide New York City residents between the ages of 14 and 21 with a summer income. SYEP educational activities will enhance the summer experience, allowing participants to develop career awareness, understand personal money management and acquire work related social skills.
This program is open to all New York City residents between the ages of 14 and 24. Selection of SYEP participants will be made by DYCD lottery.
The deadline for submitting applications is May 21, 2010 and participating organizations are listed on the application. Submission of an application does not guarantee placement into the program since selections of participants are made by lottery. The program operates for seven weeks – from July 6, 2010 to August 21, 2010, five days a week for a total of 20-25 hours per week. The hourly rate of pay is $7.25 per hour and participants are required to attend 17 hours of educational workshops. Completed applications can be submitted to any NYCHA Development Management Office. Councilmember Ulrich said, “It gives me great pleasure to help facilitate this program for a second straight year. In these tough economic times, securing summer jobs for young people is a great way to help keep them off the streets, and to gain valuable work experience. I encourage both parents and young people to stop by my office and pick up an application to apply for this program.”
