Benjamin Martin

Master Barber

Benjamin Martin, 83, a longtime Rockaway resident, died April 8.

Martin was born on November 10, 1926 in Ebro, Florida. He served in the U.S. Army and later worked as a barber. He was also an active member and past Treasurer of the Jamaica Elks Lodge 1001 and member of the Masonic Order.

Martin was preceded in death by his sister, Maddie Lee Martin; brother, James “Jacob” Washington Jr.; and son, Oliver Jenkins.

He is survived by his longtime companion, Patricia Diane Jacobs of Jamaica, New York; aunt, Alice Prioleau, of Jamaica, New York; sisters, Willie Mae Green of Vero Beach, Florida, Vadere Stinson, Vero Beach, Florida; sisters-in-law, Marion Burns of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Betty Washington of Cary, North Carolina; children, Altamease Martin Hayes of Dallas, Texas, Najashi Abdur-Rashid Muhammad (Rabiah) of Ozone Park, New York, Renee Martin-Bennett (Samuel) of Atlanta, Georgia and Cynthia Martin (Alan) of Tucson, Arizona; 14 grandchildren and many greatgrandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney Friendship Chapel, Inwood, New York. Interment took place at Nassau Knolls Cemetery, Port Washington, New York.
